The International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers (STCW)

SeaFairers

The shipping industry depends on competent, well-trained seafarers to ensure safety of life at sea, maritime security, efficiency of navigation and protection and preservation of the marine environment. The revised STCW Convention aims to provide the international standards necessary for training institutes and trainers to develop the much-needed skills and competencies for today’s seafarer. The ITF has produced this guidance to help seafarers understand the revisions and locate the information that is of most relevance to them.

The Professionals Skills Centre offers the mandatory minimum requirements for certification of officers in charge of an engineering watch in a manned engine-room or as designated duty engineers in a periodically unmanned engine-room. These requirements are set by the STCW code and more specifically in Section A-VI/1 “Mandatory minimum requirements for safety familiarization, basic training and instruction for all seafarers”.

Training includes

  1. personal survival techniques
  2. fire prevention and firefighting
  3. elementary first aid
  4. personal safety and social responsibilities
