Exploring the Student Experience: An Interview with Sundus Aden
We had the pleasure of sitting down with Sundus Aden, a fourth-year accounting student at the University of Doha for Science and Technology (UDST). Sundus shared insights about her journey through university, her involvement in various extracurricular activities, and her plans for the future. We also discussed her thoughts on campus resources and services that have made a significant impact on her academic and personal growth.
Can you tell us a bit about yourself, Sundus? Your major, year, and any extracurricular activities you're currently involved in?
Of course! I'm Sundus Aden, currently a fourth-year accounting student at UDST's College of Business. Beyond my studies, I've been actively engaged as an MC for Student Engagement and also work as a student assistant for Student Central Services.
What led you to choose UDST when you were considering universities? What drew you to this institution?
Well, to be honest, a big part of my decision was the fact that many of my friends were enrolling in UDST. It seemed like the closest and most convenient option at the time. Plus, the university's reputation for offering a unique blend of academics and social life was quite appealing.
What aspects of UDST campus life do you enjoy the most?
Campus activities, events and student life top the list for me. We have a lot of these events happening regularly, which keeps university life from getting dull. It's a great way to balance the rigors of studies.
Can you share a memorable experience or moment from your time at UDST that stands out?
Absolutely! One thing that stands out is how friendships are formed here, sometimes in the most unexpected ways. I recall becoming friends with a girl I met randomly in the bathroom. She had just been accepted into a challenging major after a long wait and didn't have anyone to share her joy with. Our chance encounter sparked a lasting friendship. It goes to show that reaching out and talking to people can lead to meaningful connections.
Managing academics and extracurricular activities can be challenging. How do you balance your workload?
Balancing everything can be tricky, but I try to keep a schedule. I structure my day around classes, my student job, spending time with friends, and tackling tasks. I'll admit I can be a procrastinator, but the fear of impending deadlines keeps me on track. Having a clear schedule and using apps like Gizmo helps me prioritize and manage my time effectively.
Do you have any advice for incoming students?
Absolutely. I'd say it's crucial to strike a balance between studying and making friends. Focusing solely on academics might lead to regrets later on. Likewise, don't abandon your studies for the sake of fun, that can backfire. And when it comes to discovering talents or interests, don't wait for opportunities—go out there and create them!
Have you been involved in any community service or volunteering activities? How has that impacted your university experience?
While I haven't done much volunteering, I did participate in beach clean-up events organized by the Environment Club. Despite the scorching heat, these initiatives brought people together and helped me make friends. It was a refreshing break from the usual routine and a great way to connect with others who share similar interests.
Are there any campus resources or support services that you found particularly helpful during your time at UDST?
Absolutely, Student Engagement deserves a shoutout. They've been instrumental in helping me nurture my public speaking talent. Besides that, departments like Student Central Services as well as Student Counseling and Accessibility Services have been crucial for academic and personal support. They're like a home away from home, and I'd highly recommend students to reach out to them when needed.
What are your career and academic goals for the future? How has your involvement on campus prepared you for these goals?
Well, my plan is to explore accounting initially, but I'm also considering a career in public relations or communication. My diverse skill set, developed through my extracurricular activities, has opened up new career possibilities. Whether I pursue accounting or something else, I feel well-prepared thanks to my experiences at UDST.
Can you share an interesting fact about yourself that people might not know?
Sure, here's something not many people know: I actually have six siblings, four of whom are sisters. People often mistake me for being a twin with my sister, Sumia, but we're not. We're just really close in age!
What are your favorite spots on campus?
My favorite spots would have to be Atrium 20 and the female Sport and Wellness building. Atrium 20 because it’s cold and indoors, which is perfect when you’re trying to escape the heat, and the female Sport & Wellness building is great for not only workouts but having a power nap since it also has a couch!
As you near the end of your university journey, do you have any parting thoughts or regrets about your time at UDST?
I'm both sad and excited about the future. I'll miss my university life, but I'm eager to step into the real world. Looking back, I wish I had joined a club earlier. It would have enriched my experience even more. So, my advice to others is not to miss out on such opportunities, create or join clubs early, and make the most of your time here!
